Sleeping when baby sleeps, and asking for help for house chores are some of the common tips for self-care as a new mom which have been some of my top priorities. It’s easy to forget about yourself when all the attention is focused on your bundle of joy, and simple things as eating becomes a privilege. Taking care of our mind and body for the first months after giving birth is necessary for a fast recovery. I realized the importance of getting help the first months of living with a newborn. I was blessed to get the visit of family members who helped me with the house and cooking for the first three months. During this time I was able to get enough sleep and have a healthy diet which contributed to breastfeeding, recovering from childbirth, and being able to take some time for myself. It’s essential to acknowledge that not all moms have the same recovery time. While some moms seem to get back to normal quickly, for others take weeks, or even months to feel like themselves again. No matter what your case is, I want you to know that you are not alone in this journey; therefore, I want to share my tips for self-care and what have helped me to stay sane in motherhood:

Taking a relaxing shower or bath:

As a new mom of a very demanding baby, taking a shower was a privilege. It was the only time I had some minutes entirely for myself. Enjoying a hot shower or bath helped me to relax my mind and body and get some time to meditate. I have recently incorporated The Waterpik® BodyWand Spa System into my shower as part of my self-care routine. This amazing shower tool has changed my regular shower time into a Spa time at home.

This amazing BodyWand Spa System features three spray settings; the PowerComb™ is the strongest setting that works amazing for my thick and easy-tangled hair, the middle setting is the SoftComb that I use to relax and massage my scalp, and the lowest setting for gentle rinse. The shower head water power is strong and promotes amazing benefits as, I believe, it increases blood circulation in my scalp which is beneficial for hair loss after pregnancy. Another great feature is the PowerPulse Massage mode for full body relaxation. It’s great to give myself a hot massage to soothe my muscles and relieve the tension on my neck since I have been having lots of discomfort from carrying my baby girl. This is the best part about my shower time when I get to massage and relax my full body. It makes me feel rejuvenated from head-to-toe.

The Waterpik® BodyWand Spa System & PowerComb™ which I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond features a powerful rinsing action, a strong massage, 7 spray modes and an 8-foot metal hose. I also love the design that matches my contemporary bathroom style and just took a few minutes to install in my shower, compared to my previous combination shower which it was difficult to install, not to mention that it was not as powerful as my new one. Who wants to take an ordinary shower when you can get a spa at home?

Taking care of the skin and body:

Right after pregnancy, my skin care routine took a back seat as my little girl became the center of attention. In just a couple of months, I started noticing that the pregnancy glow which I got so many compliments during my pregnancy was fading away as I was going through some changes in my hair, skin and body. I was already so busy taking care of my newborn, but if I didn’t start making the time for myself, it was going to be more difficult to reverse the damage; therefore, I slowly went back to my regular skin care routine
and changed some of the products to my actual skin concerns.

It’s necessary to take this time of the day and night to treat yourself. Now that I’m more adjusted to the mom life, I regularly take a few minutes to get ready for the day. Taking some time for self-care lifts up my mood, gives me confidence, and helps me to take the day easier. I’m also ready to run errands or just go for a stroll to take some fresh air with my little one.

Exercise and keep moving:

As someone who has always been working out, I had so many expectations about my workout routine after having a baby. And while I wanted to go back to the gym as soon as possible, I found it difficult especially with a newborn. Now, that my baby is getting older, I am slowly getting back to an exercise routine. I usually go biking around my neighborhood when I get the chance to step out the house and take some time for myself alone and disconnect. Sometimes I take my baby for a stroll outdoors when the weather allows, or even to the mall. Going places is beneficial for my baby girl now when her mind is absorbing and discovering this exciting new world for her. Staying active after having a baby is beneficial for both mom and baby. It has amazing benefits not only for your body but also for your mind. It’s anti-postpartum depression aid.

I have also been exercising at home with the help of fitness tutorials without having to go to the gym which sometimes is hard to commute and difficult to find time for it. Once I get my strength, I’m planning to incorporate weights into my workout routine. At home workout is even more fun and I get to educate myself on how to train my body which is a important way to connect with my mind. Remember that a healthy body is a healthy mind.

Find a way for meditation:

It has been difficult to find the time to quiet my mind as new mom, so I have learnt to find ways of disconnecting without having to stop my housewife and mommy chores. I have created my own ritual at the kitchen where I spend most of the time cooking my family meals lately. Cooking allows me to be present and mindful of the moment. It’s easier to disconnect when enjoying what I’m doing. Sometimes, I put on comfy clothes, spa music, and aromatherapy to take at least ten minutes for myself at anytime during the day. It helps me to clear up my mind and feel better for the rest of the day.

Always remember that self care is not selfish. When you take care of yourself, you take care of your family as well. It is normal to fail with consistency for the first months, because we have to adjust with our baby’s routine; however, it is important to know that small changes and taking it day-by-day are going to change you. Positive thoughts and staying away from negativity also plays an important role. Abstain from all that takes your joy away and enjoy your new life with your baby. Soak in every single moment and celebrate every milestone. Everything else will fall into place when is the right time for you.
